COS Centennial logoDear COS Member:

We are rapidly approaching the 100th Anniversary of the COS to be celebrated in October of 2012 in Chicago. This rare achievement for an organization demonstrates the value the COS has maintained for its members over the last century.  A major portion of that value has been the COS’s continued focus on the art of the physical exam through our unique live patient presentations and panels of experts in specific areas.  In celebration of our centennial, we have established an endowment at OREF to provide for an educational program for residents on the art of the physical exam as part of future meetings.

OREF was selected to manage this endowment because:

  1. Of its excellent record of managing investments,

  2. Of a commitment that ALL monies donated for this campaign would go to the COS endowment fund,

  3. Donors who gave to this campaign would also be awarded OREF Shand’s Circle recognition for gifts that met those levels, and

  4. An OREF endowment fund would be enduring and perpetuate resident education in the art of the physical exam.

Many of our members have already taken this opportunity to support our goal by making donations to this campaign. To date we have raised $129,998.16 in contributions and pledges. While this is a good start, we  hope to raise $250,000 in cash and pledges and another $250,000 in bequests. Will you please help us reach our goal?

Contributions will be recognized at our annual meeting this year and the centennial meeting the following year.  I realize many of you are retired and on fixed incomes. Would you consider a bequest to the society? A form for donations or bequests supporting the COS is included in this newsletter. Please make a commitment today and demonstrate your appreciation of the COS.  Help us ensure the continuation of our unique focus  on the art of the physical exam for the generations of young orthopaedic surgeons following behind us!

Thank you for your support,

James J. Hamilton, M.D.
Chairman, COS Centennial Committee
