Summary of the 97th Annual Meeting

By Dabney Y. Hofammann, MD

The 97th Annual Meeting was held September 10 - 12, 2009 at the Grand Hotel in Point Clear, Alabama. In attendance were members and guests from Vermont to California and from Minnesota to Texas.

The meeting chair was Dr. Frederick N. Myer of Mobile, Alabama. He brought together an excellent faculty, and we had speakers from across the country. Sessions were held on Adult Reconstruction, Sports Medicine, Trauma, Spine, Foot and Ankle, Hand Surgery, Orthopaedic Oncology, and Pediatric Orthopaedics. On Wednesday night prior to the meeting, Nix Award winner Dr. Bernard Morrey gave an excellent talk to the board regarding the intrusion of government into the practice of medicine.

Dr. Charles Rockwood of San Antonio, Texas was this year's Visiting Professor. He gave an enlightening talk on the history of Shoulder Arthroplasty. The Presidential Guest Speaker, Dr. Ben Bierbaum of Boston, Massachusetts gave us an excellent presentation on current trends in surgery of the hip. Overall, the meeting was quite informative, and several lively discussions took place.

The area around Point Clear was also a Mecca for shopping and exploration. I think it was enjoyed by all.

On Saturday, September 12, 2009, Dr. Frederick N. Myer assumed the presidency of the Clinical Orthopaedic Society as your 95th president. The 98th Annual Meeting of the Clinical Orthopaedic Society will be held in Denver, Colorado on September 23 - 25, 2010. It is hoped that you will make plans to attend, and I certainly look forward to seeing all there.

I would like to personally thank the board and membership for allowing me to be your past president and would encourage all to participate in this worthy organization.
