95th Annual Meeting in Memphis: A Huge Success

By William C. Warner, Jr., MD

The 2007 joint meeting of the Clinical Orthopaedic Society and Tennessee Orthopedic Society was a huge success.  Memphis and The Peabody Hotel was an excellent venue to hold our meeting.

See photo gallery here.

At the request of our membership and leadership, the program format was changed to an all day meeting the first two days and a half-day meeting on Saturday, to allow participants to obtain more CME credits.  We were able to offer 20 CME hour credits. Due to the increased time on the program, the coverage of clinical topics could be expanded.  A section was also added for Tennessee Orthopaedic Society resident papers and Clinical Orthopedic Society membership papers.

We were fortunate to have two excellent academic guest speakers.  Hodges Davis, MD from Charlotte Orthopedics gave an update and workshop on foot and ankle problems.   Champ Baker, MD from the Hughston Clinic gave an update on unusual uses of the arthroscope.  One of the highlights of the meeting was the deeply moving presentation by our Presidential Guest Speaker, Sister Ruth Kennedy from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.   She enlightened and inspired all the participants and spouses on the problems faced in Africa by women with fistulas from childbirth.  This truly was an unforgettable presentation.

As always, another one of the highlights of the COS meeting was the live patient presentations.  We had 5 patients present their clinical problems allowing for audience participation.  The focus of the live patient presentations were foot and ankle, sports medicine, joint reconstruction and oncology.

With this new format, the COS annual meeting is an excellent program to keep updated in orthopedics, fulfill CME requirements and have great fellowship with your colleagues from across the country.  You will not want to miss the 2008 meeting in Annapolis.
