96th Annual Meeting of COS a Success!

By Mark W. Scioli, MD

 The 96th Annual Meeting of the Clinical Orthopedic Society was held in conjunction with the Maryland Orthopedic Association September 25-27, 2008 at the Westin Annapolis Hotel, Annapolis, Maryland.  The meeting was a huge success. Kudos to Dr. Robert Peroutka, Program Chair, and Assistant Professor of Orthopedics at Johns Hopkins Medical Center, who along with COS outgoing President Angus McBryde, Jr., MD, organized an excellent panel of papers as well as live patient demonstrations.

Highlights of the meeting included presentation of the Elmer Nix Ethics Award to Augusto Sarmiento, M.D., and the induction of Dabney Hofammann, MD as the incoming President for 2009.

Keynote presentations included:

  • Mandatory Standards from AAOS Standards of Professionalism (SOPs) on Orthopedist- Industry Conflicts of Interest by E. Anthony Rankin, M.D., President of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons;
  • The Origin and History of the Handshake by James Urbaniak, M.D.;
  • Culturally Competent Care: An Orthopedists’ Responsibility by Ramon Jimenez, M.D., past Chair of AAOS Diversity Advisory Board;
  • Reconstructive Options for Massive Bone Loss of the Elbow by James Urbaniak, M.D.;
  • DVT Prophylaxis Guidelines: Who Knows Best? By Vincent Pellegrini Jr. M.D.;
  • Implementing a Superior Performing Destination Joint Center at Your Facility by Marshall Steele, M.D., and
  • Going for the Gold by Dan Jansen, former Olympian.

In addition a broad spectrum of lectures was presented highlighting the latest advances in treatment of sports injuries, foot and ankle problems, joint arthroplasty, and spinal pathologies.

20.5 hours of CME credit AMA PRA Category 1 were allowed for this meeting. Next year’s meeting will be held September 10-12, 2009 in Point Clear, Alabama. Make plans now to clear your calendar for 2009! The COS remains the most unique and dynamic society in orthopedics today. The combination of live patient presentations as well as cutting edge lectures provides for an educational experience found nowhere else in our profession.
